A proximity warning system is technology primarily used to reduce incidents between vehicles and workers in the workplace.

They can come in multiple forms, with the two main types being tag-based systems and camera-based systems.

Tag-based systems, such as SensorZone Proximity Warning Core, work by placing a detection bubble around the vehicle and giving a wearable tag to all workers on site. As soon as a tag is detected within the bubble, the alert mechanisms activate. These usually involve:

  • The worker’s tag vibrating
  • An in-cab visual alert for the vehicle operator
  • An alarm sounding to notify all nearby parties of the potential danger

Camera-based systems work by attaching several cameras to a vehicle in order to give 360-degree coverage and eliminate any operator blind spots.

They then use artificial intelligence to identify people in close proximity to the vehicle, alerting the operator if someone is too close.

Most camera systems, such as Vision360, place a screen inside the cab for the operator, so they can see exactly who is near the vehicle at all times.

Each type of proximity warning system has its own benefits and drawbacks, and is better suited to different industries and working environments.
