A zone around the bins
Proximity warning technology creates a detection zone around the bin or bins in the lift at the rear of the vehicle.
Proximity warning for refuse collection vehicle bin lifts. Protect collection crews without slowing down the round.

There have been several serious incidents involving refuse collection vehicle bin lifts, including a fatality in the United Kingdom in January 2023. In the United States, the injury rate for waste collection workers in 2022 was 4.7 cases per 100 full-time workers, up 17.5% on the previous year.
To address the problem, we adapted our proven proximity warning technology for RCV bin lifts, improving worker safety and behaviour without compromising the efficiency of collection rounds.

Proximity warning technology creates a detection zone around the bin or bins in the lift at the rear of the vehicle.

Each member of the collection crew wears a SensorZone personnel tag.

An in-cab display alerts the driver whenever a crew member is inside the zone.
If a tagged worker is in the detection zone, the system stops the full lift cycle, vibrates the worker's tag, alerts the driver and can flash an additional visual warning for the crew.

The alarm is not activated and the automatic lift cycle takes place as normal.

The alarm activates, worker tags vibrate and the lift is cancelled until no tag is present in the zone.
Based on SensorZone proximity warning, configured for bin lift safety.
Fit it to your existing fleet, or we can train your engineers to self-install.
Simple for crews to learn and clear to follow out on the round.
Stops unsafe lifts and changes behaviour, reducing risk to your workforce.
Designed to protect crews without slowing down collections.
Monitor behaviour change over time with event data and reporting.

During trials on live collection rounds, operators responded well to the system, the risk of injury fell and the impact on collections was minimal. Within a four-hour round, crews quickly adjusted their distance from the bins during the lift.
In longer-term use on a five-vehicle pilot, danger-zone entries fell by 90 to 98% compared with pre-intervention data, showing the clear behaviour change the Smart Loader prompts.

If a tag-wearing crew member is inside the detection zone around the bins, the system prevents the full lift cycle from running until no tag is present in the zone.
The worker's tag vibrates, the driver is alerted on the in-cab display and an additional visual warning can flash to warn the rest of the crew.
Trials on live rounds showed minimal impact on collections, as crews quickly adjusted how far they stand from the bins during the lift.
No. The tags are long-life with no maintenance or recharging required.
